The Alternative Viewfinder

Hello, I’m Maud

I am a Dutch 23-year-old with a background in psychology and anthropology (University College Utrecht). At the moment, I am doing a 2nd bachelors and studying Photography at KASK in Ghent (Belgium).

In 2015, I created a two-sided photoseries titled ‘What “Real” Men Cry Like’ & ‘What “Real” Women Laugh Like’, which attracted worldwide attention and shifted my attention towards a future in photography. Since then, I’ve continued to create work which often touches on similar socially-oriented topics.

In 2019, I created “the Alternative Viewfinder” out of a growing mission to spread love and awareness in this world & to assist others on their path towards happiness and peace wherever I can. I believe that the current state of our (Western) society is unhealthy in many ways, plagued by consumerism, competition, hate, and extreme individualism…

Watch my TEDx Talk:

(Youtube caption:) We are all walking, talking sets of belief systems, but WHY do we believe what we believe? There are so many different things to believe in, yet we all tend to think our beliefs are "right" - but are they? With her photo series, Dutch photographer Maud Fernhout challenges the viewer to ask themselves these questions.
